How Iran radically changed its auto import rules

Changes to import rules are changing the auto market in Iran.

The Iranian National Standards Organization (INSO) has recently provided clarity on the guidelines for importing used vehicles. This announcement is a significant step forward for those looking to bring foreign vehicles into the country.

Here's a breakdown of the new regulations:

  • Vehicles must have a certification from the INSO issued within the past five years.

  • The car should be listed on the approved "Vehicles from the EU, UK, Japan, or South Korea" directory.

  • A WVTA (Whole Vehicle Type Approval) number should be prominently displayed on the vehicle's identification plate.

  • A Certificate of Conformity (COC) from the manufacturer is mandatory.

  • For vehicles from the Gulf region or China, appropriate GCC or CCC certifications are required.

  • A certification from the Eurasian Union (EAC) is also acceptable.

Additionally, vehicles already in Iran under the care of embassies, organizations, or specific governmental bodies without standard plates are considered compliant.

However, importers should be aware of the following:

  • It's essential to declare the vehicle's origin and ensure it meets the above criteria.

  • The imported vehicle should be in good working condition, ready for regular use.

  • A formal request for certification must be submitted to the INSO.

  • The organization may conduct a physical inspection to ensure compliance.

  • Any discrepancies between the vehicle's specifications and its documentation could lead to complications.

  • Safety is paramount; vehicles should not have any significant safety defects.

  • If repairs are needed, they should be done using original parts.

  • Importers will be responsible for customs fees, which vary based on the vehicle type and value. Additionally, insurance coverage is a must, and importers should possess a valid driving license.

Lastly, the brands that have been approved for import include renowned names such as Benz, BMW, SEAT, and many others, extending to Hyundai and SsangYong.

This update is crucial for those in the automotive industry and potential car owners. Ensure you're well-informed and compliant to make the importing process as smooth as possible.
